Earthship Construction

During the summer of 1999 Emily participated in the construction of a double dome Earthship.  Earthships are completely independent dwellings which are passively heated and cooled, made from recycled materials, and have an integrated water and sewage purification system.  

She experienced first hand the fundamentals of solar orientation, natural ventilation, thermal mass, rainwater catchment, greywater and blackwater systems, and bio-remediation strategies. The experience initiated a life-long interest in living off the grid.
